AB 104 Update

On Jul 1, 2021 Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 104 into law, we would like to provide you with important information on how this legislation may relate to your student.  This bill contained three major provisions: retention (K-11 students), grading (9-12 students only), and graduation policies (9-12 students only). Below is information about the student retention portion of this legislation.

Retention
For the 2021-22 school year, students will be eligible for a retention consultation conference if they received deficient grades for at least one-half of their coursework during the 2020-2021 school year and their parent/guardian requests a retention consultation meeting in writing. Deficient grades include “1” at the K-5 level and D or F or No Credit at grades 6-8. This temporary retention policy is in addition to and does not replace any existing district retention policies.

Parents/guardians of eligible students must request the retention consultation in writing. Districts then have 30 calendar days to hold the consultation conference and 10 calendar days after that meeting to issue a final decision.

How to Request Retention Consultation Conference

If you would like to request a retention consultation for your “eligible pupil” (a pupil who has received deficient grades for at least one-half of the pupil’s coursework during the 2020-2021 academic year), please follow these steps:

1.   Review the Student Retention Frequently Asked Questions

2.   Complete the Sylvan Union School District, AB 104 Retention Consultation Request Form

3.   AB104 Retention Consultation Forms also are available at our school offices if you are unable to access the Google Form above.

4.   After submitting your AB 104 Retention Consultation Request Form, you will be contacted and a consultation meeting will be held within 30 calendar days of receipt of your request.
