Sound awareness (aka phonological awareness) is the awareness of and ability to work with sounds in spoken language and sets the stage for decoding, blending, and, eventually, word reading. Phonological awareness includes skills such as rhyming, segmenting, blending and manipulating sounds (adding, deleting, and substituting). Delays can impact the use of correct sounds for talking as well as development of reading. Come and learn some strategies for how to help support these vital skills in fun ways at home!
